Officials at Los Angeles International (LAX) will open a new taxiway today (Tuesday, June 24).
The $83 million Center Taxiway has been created to help reduce the number of near collisions noted at the airport.
At 10,000 feet long and 75 feet wide, the taxiway is the final stage of the $333 million South Airfield Improvement Program which was designed to help the airport cope with new, larger planes.
LA Mayor Antonio R Villaraigosa will be on hand to officially open the development – which took more than a year to complete.
Ian Gregor, Spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration , told the Los Angeles Times: “This is an immense safety improvement because it eliminates the circumstances that lead to many runway incidents on the south airfield, including some very serious incidents.
Between 2000 and 2003, LAX recorded the highest number of runway incursions of all U.S. airports – with the majority noted on the South Airfield.
