Sky Airline: Expert advice and recommendations

Utilize the following guide to know what to expect when flying with Sky Airline, including pre-flight check-in processes, baggage information, in-flight experience, and more.

When it comes to finding a reliable and affordable way to explore South America, Sky Airline has become my go-to choice.

Based in Chile, Sky is the country’s second-largest airline, right behind the national carrier, LATAM Airlines. What sets Sky apart is that it was the first in Chile to embrace the low-cost model, making it a budget-friendly option for travelers. Whether you’re planning a trip to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru or Uruguay, Sky Airline offers a range of international routes that make discovering these destinations economical.

With its extensive network, Sky ensures that you have plenty of options to explore the beauty and diversity of South America without breaking the bank.

Sky Airline fare categories

Sky Airline has 3 fare categories: Zero, Plus and Full. Like most airlines, the higher your fare category, the more perks you’ll enjoy.

Zero is the most affordable and basic fare category. It includes one personal item and a randomly assigned seat, making it ideal for those traveling light who don’t mind where they sit. If you’re particular about your seat, however, you can always pay a bit extra to choose your preferred spot.

The next category up is the Plus fare. I usually buy a Plus ticket because it includes a handbag, carry-on and one checked bag. While I like to pack light, I’m not quite “one personal item under the seat” light. Plus, this ticket lets you pick a standard seat, which I appreciate since I really dislike getting stuck in the middle.

The top fare on Sky Airline, the Full fare, includes a handbag, carry-on and two pieces of checked luggage. This is the perfect fare for anyone planning a serious shopping spree and needing extra baggage space to bring back all those great finds.

With a Full fare, you are able to select a seat at the front of the plane. The ticket also includes the ability to change your ticket at no extra charge. If I want a little more flexibility than normal, I will pay extra for this ticket just for that perk alone.

Check-in

You can check in up to 48 hours before your flight online or on the Sky Airline app. If you do not have luggage to check, you can head straight to the gate with your mobile boarding pass.

If you’re traveling internationally, keep in mind that you won’t be able to check in online if you have special needs, are traveling with pets, or if your child is using the unaccompanied minor service. In these cases, you’ll need to check in at the airport.

For domestic flights within Chile and Peru, Sky Airline offers automatic check-in 48 hours before your flight. No need to manually check-in – Sky Airline does it for you and emails your updated boarding pass with a QR code for boarding.

If you’re traveling with carry-on baggage only, you can head straight to the boarding area when you arrive at the airport. I love this feature because it’s one less thing to worry about while I’m traveling.

Sky Airline ticket changes

Unlike many discount carriers, Sky Airline makes it easy to adjust your travel plans with flexible ticket options. Whether your schedule changes or you decide on a different destination, you can modify the time, date or route of your flight.

If you’ve chosen the Full fare, you can make these changes without any additional fees, though you’ll need to cover any fare difference if the new flight is more expensive. With Zero and Plus fares, there’s a change fee, but you can make adjustments as many times as needed.

Simply head to the My Trips section on the airline website or reach out to the support team. The best part? You have up to 24 hours after your original flight time to make changes, giving you plenty of flexibility to adapt your plans. As a frequent traveler, I really appreciate this kind of flexibility, since it takes the stress out of last-minute changes and lets me stay focused on enjoying my trip.

Sky Airline loyalty program

If you’re a frequent flyer with Sky Airline, the Sky Plus loyalty program offers a straightforward way to earn rewards every time you travel. As you accumulate points from the purchase of flights, seat upgrades or added baggage, you can redeem those points for flights, movie tickets or even concert tickets.

The program has three tiers – Copper, Gold and Platinum – each offering its own set of benefits. For instance, Platinum and Gold members get to enjoy preferential boarding, while Platinum members can choose their seats and bring along extra baggage at no additional cost. Points can also be bought or transferred, giving you flexibility in how you use them.

While the Sky Plus rewards program is free to join, I’ve found that it doesn’t offer much value for me as a US-based traveler. That said, if you spend a considerable amount of time flying in South America, the rewards program comes with a few extra perks that could make your journey easier.

Sky Wallet

The Sky Wallet is a handy digital tool if you’re flying with Sky Airline and want an easy way to manage your travel funds. It’s designed to handle your refunds and compensations, letting you put that money to good use, whether it’s booking your next flight, adding extra luggage or snagging a better seat. Plus, you can transfer the funds directly to your bank account if you prefer.

It’s free to use with no hidden fees, and you can access it through the Sky website or app. Overall, it’s a simple way to keep track of your travel budget and make the most out of any refunds. If you’re a frequent traveler, having the Sky Wallet on hand could definitely streamline the way you manage your travel expenses.

Sky Airline onboard menu

My first in-flight meal on Sky Airline was a pleasant surprise. While it might not be as extravagant as Delta’s ice cream cart, it’s a definite step up from the usual stale pretzels you’ll find on some other airlines. I love the ham and cheese croissant sandwich – it’s the perfect size lunch to keep you going during a long travel day.

Depending on your flight, you might also get to choose from options like a cup of noodles, a hamburger or ravioli. Like most discount airlines, they charge for extras, including soda, water and coffee. However, the convenience of being able to pay with cash or credit card is a nice touch, making it easy to grab a quick bite on board.

Sky Airline pet policy

When traveling with your pet on Sky Airline, there are a few key details to keep in mind. Only dogs and cats are allowed in the cabin. They must be in a soft-sided carrier with a combined weight (pet plus carrier) not exceeding 10 kilograms (22 pounds).

If your pet needs to travel in the cargo hold, Sky Airline allows dogs, cats and even ornamental birds, depending on space availability. There’s an extra fee for bringing your pet along, but here’s a tip – it’s cheapest to pay for this when you’re booking your ticket. Just make sure to handle the payment before you get to the airport, as you won’t be able to pay at the ticket counter.

Sky Airline refund policy

If you change your mind after buying a ticket with Sky Airline, you may still have the option to cancel and get a refund, depending on when your flight is and the country where you made the purchase.

For example, if you’re flying within Chile or bought your ticket in the US, you typically have up to 48 hours to request a refund if your flight is at least a week away. Each country has its own specific rules for cancellations, so it’s worth checking the details based on where you made your purchase.
