If Florida and Mexico are looking a little stale, take a trip to the island of Fuerteventura and enjoy the same climate and sunny skies from across the world. Located at the same latitude as Florida and Mexico, Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canary archipelago and features the same type of climate as the favorite destination spots. However, flights to Fuerteventura offer something that the U.S. destinations don’t – a little less people and a lot more peace and quiet. Fuerteventura is still undiscovered by mainstream tourism so the island’s beaches are sparsely populated and there isn’t much in the way of tourist attractions. However, if you’re looking for a vacation spent doing just about nothing in the sun and relaxing under the stars at night, Fuerteventura is the place to visit. The island is easily accessible from its neighboring towns. Travelers can board or a ferry or book a domestic Fuerteventura flight for a day of rest and relaxation on the tranquil island.

Fuerteventura Climate

Fuerteventura has a glorious climate all year with temperatures rarely dropping below 63°F (17°C) and more often above 82°F (28°C) during the day, and gentle sea breezes keep the island from baking. Rainfall in the summer months is almost non-existent, but showers are likely between October and April. Over the winter months travellers will need a sweater and light trousers for evenings, and possibly the odd rare cloudy day, but any other time of year will only need the bare essentials such as shorts and T-shirts.

Fuerteventura Insider Information

  • On the northern part of the island is the village of La Oliva, once home to military governors. Visit Casa des Coroneles, a restored townhouse then walk over to the church in the middle of the village where you’ll find a Juan de Miranda Baroque-style painting.
  • Spend the day at the La Lajita Oasis Park located in the town of La Lajita. Among the many attractions is the Camel Safari where kids (and adults) can take a trip to the top of the mountain and the Botanical Gardens, one of the biggest in Europe.
  • Take a trip back in time by visiting Tefia. This small village to the south of La Oliva is home to Fuerteventura’s peasant lodgings and Ecomuseo de la Alcogida, an open-air museum which has been modeled on an old Canarian village. Throughout the museum’s seven houses are exhibitions of traditional farm work including carpentry and cheese making. The museum also holds educational workshops demonstrating how pottery, weaving and stone cutting were done in the past.
  • Some of the best beaches in Europe are in Fuerteventura. Jandia in the south is best known for its flat beaches while Corralejo in the north is blessed with curvaceous sand dunes. Don’t be surprised if you see people walking around in their birthday suits instead of bathing suits, nudity is widely accepted on the island.
  • Most of the island’s lively cafes, restaurants and shops are scattered around the harbor in Puerto del Rosario. While there, take a break from shopping and pop into the home of exiled poet Miguel de Unamuno.
