Lufthansa (Deutsche Lufthansa AG) is the largest German airline, headquartered in Cologne. Its main bases are at Frankfurt International Airport in Frankfurt am Main (Lufthansa's primary traffic hub) and Franz Josef Strauss International Airport in Munich. There is a secondary hub at Dusseldorf Airport. The airline flies domestically and internationally to almost 200 destinations. Lufthansa is a founding member of the Star Alliance, one of the world's major airline partnerships.

There are different rules for different classes and check-in times vary according to your departure airport. In general, economy class passengers should check in between 90 and 120 minutes before their flight is scheduled to depart. A full list of check-in times is available here.
Previous night check-in is available at 12 German airports as are WAP and SMS check-in. Lufthansa passengers can also use quick check-in machines. First and Business Class passengers may check in from anywhere in Europe by phone. In Germany, call 0561 - 99 33 99, and your boarding pass will be waiting for you at the airport (between 5.30am and 11pm, 30 minutes before departure). In the U.S., dial 1-800-645-3880. etix passengers (electronic ticket) can check-in online for same-day flights, starting at 6am for following-day flights. AirRail check-in is also available at German airports.

Carry-on: One piece is allowed, not weighing more than 17lbs.
Checked: On several international routes from (and to) U.S./Canada you can check two items. Each item can weigh up to 50lbs. Children under two years can carry one item up to 22lbs, plus a stroller or baby basket.
On all other international routes and within Germany, the free baggage allowance depends on the class in which you are traveling: 70lbs in First Class; 66lbs in business class; 44lbs in economy class.
Excess: charges are based on the "zone" of travel. For travel within Germany and to the UK, the charge is €5 per kg. For flights to the U.S. and Canada, any bags weighing between 50lbs and 70lbs will be charged a flat fee of $50 per bag.
