In terms of entertainment, Pittsburgh is more than the Pirates and the Steelers. It’s got one of the liveliest arts scenes in the country. Music, theater, museums – they’re all here at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers.
If you’re looking for a weekend getaway in a city with a terrific quality of life, first-rate restaurants, and entertainment diversified enough to please almost anyone Pittsburgh is not a bad place to start.
Consider some of the options for the Aug 5 – 7 weekend:
- The Pittsburgh CLO presents Jesus Christ Superstar. Broadway-quality shows set up shop in Pittsburgh’s Benedum Theater, located in the heart of the city’s cultural district. This particular early 1970’s Andrew Lloyd Weber masterpiece is as thought provoking as it is tender. From it spring some of the best-known songs of a generation, such as ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him.’ Run time for the performance is about two-and-a-half hours. Friday Aug. 5 the curtain goes up at 8pm. Saturday Aug. 6 there are a pair of performances – at 2 and 8pm. Sunday Aug. 7 there’s just the matinee. It too is at 2pm.
- The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh says hello to Dora the Explorer. No, you don’t have to necessarily leave the kids behind when you travel. Not if there’s something to keep them engaged. That could just be Dora’s Pirate Adventure, the Theatrical Show. Those shows are Friday Aug. 5, Saturday Aug. 6, and Sunday Aug. 7 at 2:30 and 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 for everyone who’s not a member of the museum. $26 per person gets kids and seniors into both the museum and the show. This is a great chance for grandparents and their kid’s kids to get together. The combo price for adults is $27. One of the coolest things about the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is the garage and workshop. Kids get to build things, take them apart, put them back together and see how they work. The museum is located at 10 Children’s Way, on Allegheny Square.
- The Phipps Conservatory’s Summer Flower Show: Living Harmoniously with Nature. The idea here is to cross boundaries, and display sustainable material in a new way. See an edible garden, a living wall melded with furniture made up of discarded street signs, and a sunken garden. This is no mere garden show. It’s a template on how to live on this planet without wrecking it. A walk through the conservatory can take as little as 90 minutes, but you’ll probably want to linger longer. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, and $9 or kids two through 18. To drink all this in, set your GPS to 700 Frank Curto Drive, Pittsburgh 15213.
- The Pirates take on the San Diego Padres at PNC Park. Friday Aug. 5 through Sunday Aug. 7 the Padres are in town, and you can see the hometown team (they’re not bad this year) take ‘em on. Reserved admission ranges from $9 to $52.
