Airport Overview

Spanning a railway and motorway, Leipzig/Halle Airport is located close to the cities of Leipzig and Halle. In an attempt to win the hosting bid for the 2012 Olympic Games, the airport was completely revamped and modernized (at German taxpayers’ expense). However, the city of Leipzig lost the bid to London and the airport now seems somewhat deserted, with passengers often having to walk long distances through desolate halls, or sit in excessively large lounges with little or no company.

Although some travelers may find this a little dreary, many enjoy the quiet, state-of-the-art amenities and friendly and helpful staff. It all adds up to a world-class experience without the chaos and crowding often associated with equally modern, but busier, airports.

Just over two million passengers use Leipzig/Halle Airport each year. English is not widely spoken by airport staff, so brush up on your German in case you need to ask for their assistance.

Terminal Transfer

Leipzig/Halle is a massive airport that features two terminals, namely the Central Terminal and Terminal B. It’s a long walk from check-in to passport control.

Getting into Town

Train: A train trip from Leipzig/Halle Airport to Leipzig Central Station takes 14 minutes, while a trip to Halle Central Station takes 16 minutes. Trains usually run every 30 minutes.

Bus: The bus stop is located in car park 3. Buses travel twice an hour.

Taxi: Numerous taxi stands are situated in front of Terminal B. The duration of a trip to the city center of Leipzig is approximately 30 minutes, while the journey to the centre of Halle takes about 40 minutes.

Car Parking

A total of 6,000 parking bays make hunting for a free space a breeze, but the vast array of parking options and price structures may prove confusing. A free shuttle service runs from the car parks to the terminal building.

Information Desks

Located on the ground floor of Terminal B, the information desk manages all airport inquiries, including those regarding lost property. It also offers a storage facility for keys and documents, as well as car starter kits.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs, currency exchange and post office.

Luggage: There is a left-luggage center and the airport offers a courier service that collects your luggage from, and delivers it to, your chosen location.

Conference and business: Conference rooms offer the use of video and LCD-projectors, photocopiers, fax machines, overhead projectors and telephones at an additional charge.

Other facilities: Leipzig/Halle Airport has a pharmacy, casino, flight bag vending machines (for liquids), photo booth, Internet access points, telephones, massage armchairs, chapel and first-aid facilities. The entire airport is equipped to accommodate the handicapped.

Wi-Fi: Pay-as-you-go Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport’s terminals via The Cloud.
