There’s more to Mexico than Cancun and Cabo. With 31 different and diverse states and countless coastal towns offering something for all types of travel, Mexico offers much more for those ready to explore. But for those travelers looking for a more relaxed Mexico beach vacation, consider the unspoilt area of Costa Chica in the state of Oaxaca.
Along Oaxaca’s coast is Puerto Escondido – commonly referred to as just “Puerto” – a charming beach town that still manages to keeps its fishing village and coffee growing roots. Even as its popularity grows as a tourist destination, Puerto has yet to become home to any five-star resorts or designer hotels. In Puerto, wearing a shirt and sandals represents formal attire.
Your flight to Mexico lands in Puerto Escondido’s (PXM), a two-gate airport located just a few minutes from unwinding on the beaches of the Pacific. Despite its sleepy exterior, Puerto is still a premier Latin American surf destination. The nearly perfect waves on Zicatela Beach, situated just 2 kilometers from the town center, serves as the home of two annual international surfing tournaments. Professionals and numerous other surfers attempt to ride the famous Mexican Pipeline. Are you game?
In addition to the typical beach pastimes of surfing and snorkeling, eco-tourism excursions are available. Hikes to hidden waterfalls, horseback trips to hot springs, kayaking trips down the Colotepec River or day trips to the local lagoons can all be arranged. Yet, even with so much to do, Puerto Escondido remains a place of solace, where you never feel pushed. Enjoy an afternoon siesta on a beachfront hammock followed by a cerveza to toast the splendid sunset. Then enjoy a dinner of fantastic fresh seafood (fish tacos are a must) and you’ve got a perfect summer routine. Such a daily ritual is the true charm of Oaxaca’s Puerto Escondido.
Mexico Travel Tips: All the ATMs are in the town center, so if you stay at one of the remote Mexico beach destinations in Oaxaca, make sure you have enough pesos as many places only accept cash.
Hotels: Many Mexico accommodations in Puerto Escondido come with a breathtaking view. The secluded boutique hotel Villas Carrizalillo is situated on a cliff that overlooks the scenic and tranquil Playa Carrizalillo and starts at $120 per night. Or, you can pay less to stay on the main street of Zicatela Beach at the Hotel Arco Iris and opt for either cliff top views or beach level rooms.
Flights: Mexico flights from Los Angeles start at $324, but you might have to connect once you’re in Mexico. It’s best to book a direct flight to Mexico City (MEX) and search for a domestic carrier to take you to Puerto. Mexicana offers round-trip Mexico City flights from $150.
