Flyers crave predictability – uniformity and consistency. They’re part and parcel of good service. To that end, Delta Air Lines has set up elite access lines at each of its gates (domestically). These are the portals that permit premium passengers to board first, without having to queue up behind flyers in other zones.

Delta calls the lanes “Breezeways,” and they’re open to flyers packing premium plastic: SkyMiles members holding Silver, Gold, or Platinum status; or SkyTeam Elite or Elite Plus members. If you’re flying First, Business, or BusinessElite you can also use the line.

This set-up won’t get you through security faster, just on to the airplane quicker once you’ve cleared security. “With Breezeway, our premium customers don’t have to rush a last-minute business meeting in the Crown Room Club, or end a conference call before they board,” says Joan Vincenz, DL’s director of Global Product Development.

Delta is not unique among U.S. carriers in proffering premium boarding lanes at the gate. SkyTeam partner Continental Airlines has had them for some time.

Delta says it intends to expand the Breezeway concept in coming months to Canada, the Caribbean, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and even those destinations served by Delta Connection.
