Expansion plans at San Diego International Airport could be changed after suggestions from the city’s mayor.

Jerry Sanders has suggested that instead of building ten new gates and extending the parking lot at Terminal 2, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority should concentrate on the north side of the site.

He said that moving the gates to the north side would ease congestion on North Harbor Drive and enable better access for passengers traveling to the airport along Interstate 5.

Mayor Sanders told The San Diego Union-Tribune: “I’ m not saying we don’t need the ten extra gates, because we do.

“But this is too important for us not to look at these issues at a different level, and it would only be a short delay.”

Officials from the airport authority have spent three years planning the $1 billion expansion, with the new gates expected to open by 2012.
