This will expand connection opportunities for oneworld passengers. Mexicana will become a member of the globe-girdling alliance in 2009, opening up a number of new Latin American routes to so-called “seamless connections,” as well as reciprocal frequent-flyer accrual and redemption with other oneworld carriers.
Even as Mexicana will join oneworld as a fully fledged member, its discount airline subsidiary Click Mexicana will become an affiliate member of the alliance.
Oneworld’s key player is American Airlines, which already has a marketing relationship with Mexicana. Along with LAN Airlines, and its sister carriers LAN Argentina and LAN Peru, oneworld looks to be the dominant airline alliance in Latin America.
More evidence of the heft oneworld is about to add: Mexicana is the largest non-U.S. airline operating out of Los Angeles International, the airline’s biggest hub outside of Mexico.
