Loreto overview

Located on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, Loreto offers a relaxed beach resort, gorgeous natural sights and great opportunities to meet the region’s diverse wildlife.

This is a superb destination for nature lovers above all. Take boat tours to see whales and dolphins in what may be the world’s finest place to see majestic orcas and sperm whales in their natural habitat. Fish for species like marlin and dorado, or strap on your snorkel and flippers and lazily explore the reefs with their stunning array of corals and fish.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy as well. Rent kayaks for the day, or join extended beach kayaking tours along the deserted coast of the Loreto Marine National Park. Hike down Tabor Canyon, rent bikes or experience scuba diving.

The area around Loreto is also full of history. Drive out to the atmospheric mission at San Javier to see one of the oldest catholic sites in the Americas and check out the ancient cave paintings along the way. And head to the Museum of Missions in the city itself to find out all about the region’s history.

Beach fans will be in their element in Loreto as well, and the coast of Baja is strewn with glorious, unspoilt beaches. Take a short drive north to Coyote Beach or take a trip to Coronado Island to experience pure solitude in beautiful natural surroundings.

Back on land, the resort offers plenty of high quality Mexican dining options, fine jewellery shops, a vibrant farmers’ market as well as a lively nightlife which provides plenty of entertainment without being too raucous. This is the kind of destination which balances excitement, beauty and relaxation in an intoxicating mixture.

Getting around Loreto

Loreto is small enough to be extremely walkable, and the beach, city centre and major accommodation providers are all close together. However, to reach sites like San Javier or the coast of Baja California, a rental car is a superb option. Renting a boat may also be advisable for fishing lovers and anyone wanting to tour the Coronado Islands.

Getting from the Airport to the City

Unfortunately, there is no public transportation between the centre of town and the airport, but taxi firms have taken up the slack and should be present in great numbers to meet any arrivals. An even better option may be to hook up with shuttle buses provided by hotels or, even better still, drive off in a pre-booked rental car.
