      History

    United Airlines Check-in

    Online check in is available starting 24 hours prior to departure. For most customers traveling within the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, United recommends having check-in and baggage check completed at least 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure. For most customers traveling internationally, United recommends having check-in and baggage check completed at least 60 minutes prior to scheduled departure.

    Carry on

    One carry-on item limited to 45 linear inches (length + width + height).

    One personal item such as a shoulder bag, backpack, laptop bag, purse or other small item limited to 36 linear inches.

    All carry-on items must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

    Economy Checked Baggage

    Checked baggage fees apply for most checked bags. Please use United’s fee calculator to determine the fees for your checked baggage.

    A checked bag may not exceed 62 inches in overall dimensions (length + width + height) or weigh more than 50 pounds. Overweight and oversized baggage fees will apply to any bag that exceeds these dimensions.

    Overweight and Oversized Baggage

    A $100 fee applies to a bag between 51 and 70 pounds. A $200 fee applies to a bag that exceeds 70 pounds but is less than 100 pounds. A $100 (for travel within the U.S., and between the U.S. and Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) or $200 (for travel to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, Asia, Australia, Micronesia, Europe, the Middle East or Africa) fee applies to any bag that exceeds 62 linear inches, but is less than 115 linear inches. Bags that exceed 100 pounds or 115 linear inches are not accepted as checked baggage.

    Passenger change details

    Changes can be made online if the ticket was booked online. For all other changes, please call United at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331). Change fees may apply.

    Customers may be eligible to have change or cancellation fees waived under United's 24-hour booking policy, which allows passengers to modify reservations without paying a fee within 24 hours of purchasing a ticket.

    Child fares

    Infants who are at least seven days old, but younger than two years old and traveling within the United States may sit in an adult’s lap for free. Children younger than two traveling internationally must purchase a ticket. Customers must indicate to United if they are traveling with an infant.

    Senior fares

    Senior fares may be available. Check with the airline before booking. When making your booking online, be sure to select the "Seniors" category.

    Pets

    United allows domesticated cats, small dogs, rabbits and birds to travel in the cabin on most flights within the U.S. when accompanied by a human. A $125 fee applies each way for an in-cabin pet. An additional $125 fee applies for each stopover within the U.S. that lasts more than four hours, or more than 24 hours outside the U.S. A pet must be carried in an approved kennel (hard or soft-sided) that fits under the seat in front of you. United offers a program called PetSafe for pets that are not eligible to fly in the cabin.

    Carrying musical instruments

    Musical instruments can be carried on or checked. An extra seat may also be purchased for a large musical instrument. A small instrument may be considered a personal item, but it must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat. Checked musical instruments should be contained in a hard case. Overweight and oversized baggage fees may apply. An instrument that weights more than 70 pounds will not be accepted. Contact United’s reservations department for any instrument that measures more than 115 linear inches.

    In-flight Wi-Fi is currently being installed on United flights and is now available on select flights.

Meals are available for purchase on most flights lasting more than three and a half hours traveling in or between North America, the Caribbean and select destinations in Latin America. Complimentary meals are available on select Latin America, Caribbean, Trans-Atlantic, trans-Pacific, intra-Pacific, Micronesia and South American flights. On-demand audio and video systems as well as DIRECTV are available on some flights. Movies are available on in-cabin overhead screens on some aircraft and certain flights. Music and video games are also available on select flights. In-flight Wi-Fi is currently being installed on United flights and is now available on select flights.

    MileagePlus is United’s frequent flyer program. Earned award travel can be applied to flights, Premier Access airport services, merchandise and more.
