You don’t have to get wasted in Margaritaville to enjoy a bit of the good life on Key West. But you do have to know how to have a good time.

A few key things to keep in mind: Key West is notoriously laid back and ‘happy hour’ is a religious experience. Hemingway’s cats do live in his home, and there are in fact chickens running wild on the island. The ‘dolphin’ on the menu is not the same ‘dolphin’ you went swimming with earlier in the day (dolphin fish are typically served grilled or fried). Key West, also known as the Conch Republic, offers its own passports, it’s own spectacular sunsets and the nightlife is legendary.

Hop off your Key West flight and grab an eco-friendly ride to your hotel or inn. Electric-powered cars can be rented off the street and pedi-cabs are everywhere and ready to bike you to your destination.

There’s a Key West accommodation for any traveler. If you’re wanting a little luxury, opt for a Key West hotel along the marina. Name brands including the Westin and Hyatt offer Key West resort and spa options located directly on the beach. If you’re on a budget, Key West B&B’s or guest houses will provide an ideal night’s stay without breaking the bank. Most B&Bs on the island offer complimentary breakfasts and tour discounts. If you want to be in the middle of it all, find a B&B or hotel on Duval Street.

Speaking of Duval Street…

After the sun sets, Duval Street turns into the island’s mecca for all-night libations. From five-star restaurants to Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, to endless bars filled with live entertainment, there’s something for everyone on this 14-block main street.

Before your vacation ends, make a special trip out to sea. Whether you choose a dolphin sighting, snorkel trip, parasailing adventure or a sunset cruise, you won’t be disappointed. According to tour operators, the best time to see dolphins is during the off-season months (June, July and August). Helpful budget hint: Each tour operator offers discounts on more tours once you book with them. In addition, the pamphlet you get when you book your water excursion is filled with discounts at local eateries.
