Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is to see a dramatic expansion this coming week, with five new gates set to open.
As the airport continues to attract more daily nonstop flights and larger aircraft, it will now offer 15 gates, thanks to the 54,000-square-foot addition to the terminal.
Airport officials told the Island Packet that the hub served more than a million people each year, a figure which has risen by around 6 percent year-on-year.
The new terminal will include the Hilton Head Isle retail square, a Starbucks outlet, a Dewar’s Clubhouse Bar and Grille restaurant and the Hilton Head Marketplace gift shop.
Construction on the $14.2 million project began in April 2006, and a further expansion is planned for 2014.
Lori Lynah, an airport spokeswoman, told the Island Packet that the airport’s new parking deck – which cost $34 million – will open on October 1.
