The cost of dining and accommodations may eat into your travel budget, but the city is full of free events and activities:

• Volunteers lead the year-round free walking tours and share their knowledge of the city’s history, lore and legends; FAQs.

• Visit local museums on free, or “pay as you wish” days.

• Macy’s Film Night in the Parks (Dolores, Washington Square, and Union Square Parks) feature free classic flicks; through October 6.

• The Golden Gate Park Band performs every Sunday (through October 14). The musical selections include classic band favorites, opera, marches, Broadway show tunes, orchestral transcriptions, novelty tunes, folk music and big band swing.

• The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival runs through October 28 and includes dozens of artistic, cultural and community events (music, theater, dance, spoken word, and family and children’s programming).

• The Stern Grove Free Summer Concerts (June 17 to August 19) include performances by the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet; Huey Lewis and the News; and Hugh Masekela.

• The CUESA-sponsored Easy Market Meals is a new culinary program at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Pop in between 11:15am and 1:15pm for a free cooking demonstration using fresh, local ingredients available in the market. Attendees get a sample (as well as a recipe and a suggested shopping list). Every other Tuesday, June 12 and 26, July 10 and 24, August 7 and 21. CUESA sponsors other free food-centric events throughout the year.
