Today, President Obama makes his first appearance in New Orleans to discuss relief efforts. While only there for a short time, he plans to make important decisions regarding steps forward in bringing comfort and stability back to the southern city.

The area has struggled to rebuild itself since Hurricane Katrina hit in August of 2005, and has since worked to repair $40 billion in damages, though getting financial aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been one of its biggest challenges.

Obama’s mission in visiting New Orleans is to stir up momentum, pick up the pace, and get things done. It may be his first trip there, but his administration has visited 18 times since March, and in the past year alone, the Obama administration has helped resolve 76 of the 120 existing reconstruction projects.  Now, he’s looking to rebuild schools, roads, and bridges in order to get the city back to normal functionality.

Obama’s visit gives residents home that improvement is soon to come. Now more than ever, New Orleans needs as much economic aid as possible, which can also come in the form of tourist dollars. If you’ve ever wanted to see Mardi Gras up close, or spend time on Bourbon Street, your money will be well-spent in this hard-working city. Book flights to New Orleans for a trip of a lifetime, and to contribute to a city in need.
