When it comes to Oktoberfest, one thing comes to mind: lots and lots of beer.

Germany’s 16-day festival certainly takes its brews seriously. Oktoberfest only serves beer brewed in Munich’s city limits at a minimum of 6 percent alcohol by volume (also known as the Bavarian purity law). In fact, only six breweries are allowed to serve the nearly 2 million gallons of beer that flow at Oktoberfest.

But beyond the beer, Oktoberfest is actually the world’s largest fair. More than 6 million people descend upon Munich for the rides, Bavarian fare, music and dancing that fills the city’s streets during the celebration. Believe it or not, the world’s most famous beer festival is actually quite the family-friendly event.

Whether you dream of heading to Munich to experience Oktoberfest for yourself or are planning to raise a glass (or two) at a local celebration, you can get inspired with this photo tour.
