No matter where you’re heading, it’s always a good idea to save a little luggage space for souvenirs. After all, souvenirs are one of the best ways for us to commemorate our trips or share a part of our travels with loved ones back home. Whether you’re a postcard collector, a t-shirt hoarder or a traveler looking to splurge on one perfect souvenir, this list will point you to some must-have items around the world.

London, England

With its longstanding tradition of afternoon tea, London is the perfect spot to pick up an authentic English teapot to bring a slice of British culture back home.

Japan

If your travels take you to Japan, don’t let yourself leave without picking up an authentic Japanese kimono. You can opt for an inexpensive, off-the-rack kimono or splurge by going to an authentic kimono outfitter and getting a custom silk gown.

France

Sure, your local wine store might have a fairly decent champagne selection, but nothing compares to sipping authentic French champagne in the Champagne region of France. Skip the large champagne vineyards (since many export to the U.S.) and head to the smaller champagne cellars to discover your new favorite sparkling bubbly, and grab a bottle or two to bring back as a souvenir of your French getaway. (You must be at least 21 years old to bring alcohol into the U.S., and tax-free quantity restrictions apply. Usually one bottle is fine — just make sure you check the latest U.S. Customs information.)

New York, New York, United States

Check your hesitations about kitschy souvenirs at the door and indulge in some “I Heart NYC” goodies to celebrate your trip to the Big Apple. You won’t have to look far to find the city’s de facto “I Heart NYC” slogan strewn across everything from t-shirts and sweaters to keychains and coffee cups.

Australia

What better way to commemorate your trip Down Under than with a hand-painted boomerang? These Aboriginal hunting tools are now synonymous with Australia as a whole, and you can pick up your own hand-painted version during your travels.

Seattle, Washington, United States

Skip the coffee beans (after all, there’s bound to be plenty of Starbucks back home) and opt for a few boxes of smoked salmon instead. Salmon is plentiful in the Pacific Northwest, and don’t worry: the locally smoked varieties travel well.
