From the “no pain, no gain” file there’s this. Get ready to slow down and watch out if you’re driving through Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), specifically along the westbound lanes of Sky Harbor Boulevard south of Terminal 4. What was a three-lane thoroughfare is now a two-lane affair two, and it will be that way through June 2009.

Despite the inconvenience, you’re going to like the reason. PHX is adding a quartet of new security lanes to Terminal 4’s Checkpoint C. That will make for eight lanes in all. Despite the diminution of air traffic nationwide, PHX can use the extra lanes. Faster passage for flyers.

The C Checkpoint is located on a bridge over Sky Harbor Boulevard. Thus the vehicular delays. Workers are actually widening the bridge by 120 feet to accommodate the four new lanes.

More traffic info: the eastbound loop return from the upper level on the north side of Terminal 4 is also going to be shut down until June 2009. Watch for signs, and slow down. Before long, you’ll be able to speed up when traversing security.
