The capital city of Texas is an eclectic city, to say the least. The self-proclaimed live music capital of the world is probably best known for the annual South by Southwest festival, and Austin is also becoming a destination for foodies, techies and travelers alike.

If you’re planning a weekend escape to Austin, here’s a guide to help you make the most of your visit.

Stay

While there are plenty of large, luxurious hotels in the area, Austin is best experienced through its funky boutique properties. Hotel San Jose is a popular choice and has a reputation as one of the hippest hotels in town. If you’re looking for something a little more modern with a bit of sophistication, Hotel Saint Cecilia is calling your name.

Eat

Austin certainly has no shortage of food – or variety. To cover the basics, you’ll want to brave the lines at Franklin Barbecue for a brisket sandwich or plate of pulled pork. For authentic Tex-Mex, don’t miss Pelons on Red River Street. And for something uniquely southern, you can try a plate of chicken and waffles at 24 Diner.

With the basics out of the way, don’t miss a bowl of noodles at Daruma Ramen or a sampling of tequila and Mexican fare at La Condesa.

Do

Austin offers something for everyone, from outdoor activities to nights filled with live music and drinking. To start, head downtown to check out the Texas Capitol Building. It isn’t hard to miss, seeing as how it’s made of pink granite and larger than the White House. You’ll find monuments throughout the property and inside, a free tour will take you through the various chambers and rooms. Nearby, you can pop into the Bullock Texas State History Museum for a look at Texas’ past, and at Mexic-Arte Museum you can enjoy Mexican American fine arts.

On your second day, don’t miss outdoor havens like Zilker Park and Lady Bird Lake. In the evenings, experience the city’s live music scene on Sixth Street or Red River Street.
