Los Angeles International Airport has chose Fentress Architects to redesign the mega-port, closing out the worldwide search for a designer and embarking on a new plan to upgrade the airport’s facade.

Fentress will use inspiration from the Pacific Ocean to recreate the airport, which serves millions of domestic and international travelers annually.

The redesign will feature a new ceiling representing waves crashing on the beach, and arches will be constructed for a pedestrian walkway.

Antonio R Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles, called the plans “spectacular” and “unmistakably LA”, adding that they embody “the character of Los Angeles and [create] a remarkable sense of place”.

Curtis W Fentress, lead designer of the project, added: “The airport is the first and last impression travelers have of this great city. Los Angeles deserves a world-class airport that is recognized as a landmark worldwide.”
