The JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Jakarta hotels are re-opening today, less than two weeks after they were struck by suicide bombers, the BBC is reporting.
The luxury hotels located in Jakarta suffered structural damage when two bombs went off simultaneously at both hotels, killing seven people.
A lounge in the Marriott and a restaurant in the Ritz-Carlton remain closed to visitors while the hotels work to fix the damage.
“We have resumed our normal business operations today. We hope to be
able to reach an average hotel occupancy of 60 to 70 percent like
before, in spite of the bombings,” said Marriott spokeswoman Ina Ilmiaviatta. “We have certainly increased our security measures.”
The hotel bombings sent shockwaves through the travel industry, including reaction from hotel owners and frequent hotel guests asking if hotels are doing all they can to protect the safety of their visitors. Social media sites including Twitter and Facebook were plastered with ideas on how to increase security at hotels, including adding security lines and baggage checks, similiar to those at airports.
