San Diego may be a hot spot for chilled-out beaches, but its Gaslamp Quarter is a world of high-class restaurants, trendy bars, and upscale shopping that beckons a more refined metropolis. Hotel Indigo is a new, eco-friendly establishment recently settled in San Diego, and it’s worthy of some major eco-praise. Aside from its modern exterior, posh interior and swanky rooftop restaurant and lounge, this boutique green hotel is sustainable throughout.
The green hotel is certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and is one of 19 hotels of its kind in the United States. It gained its credentials by setting high standards for efficiency in both structure and amenities. Phi Bar and Bistro, the on-site restaurant, optimizes daylight to reduce energy by using floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light and ventilation.
The restaurant’s menu also fits the bill for green travel. Only the freshest local and seasonal ingredients go into these gourmet dishes, and the ninth floor’s herb garden takes the word “local” to the extreme. Chefs pick from basil, spearmint, rosemary, and tarragon plants to accent each delectable menu item, and use a compost system in the kitchen to break down foods organically and re-soil the earth.
If its progressive eco-moves don’t intrigue you, take a seat on the adjacent Phi Terrace Bar – a rooftop lounge equipped with fire pits, reflection pools, and views of the entire city (not to mention a clear look into PETCO Park to watch MLB games).
While most people gladly hop on a flight to San Diego to get there, local travelers with hybrid or low-fuel emission cars receive reserved parking spots and special discounts for their carbon-kicking efforts.
This green hotel offers a few different options to consider when you’re booking. We did a quick search for the last weekend in July, and found a regular double room at $164. A room with breakfast (pastry, yogurt, coffee and tea) starts at $184. The Indigo Interlude package (includes in-room sparkling wine) and the Indigo Indulge package (with dessert delivery for two) both start at $189.
