Sore throats, earaches, and diarrhea – you can’t predict these things, but they do happen, and if you’re not prepared it can be a very long flight.
While your little ones may seem well at the house, any parent knows that a car ride, a packed airport and a little anxiety can turn your child from angel to demon in seconds.
Be prepared to handle any situation as it comes up with these medical tips:
1. Ear pain can be, well, a pain. Here are a few things you can do: Ask the flight attendant for two plastic cups and paper towels soaked in hot water. Place the wet paper towels at the bottom of the cup and then cover your baby’s ears. This will create a vacuum that will help equalize the pressure in the ear. I felt odd doing it at first, but it really works. Let each child chew a piece of gum during takeoff and landing. The
chewing helps relieve pressure.
2. Make sure your kids drink plenty of water before the flight and during the flight. It is easy to get dehydrated on a plane, which can make for cranky kids. Avoid soda or sugary drinks, which only adds to the restlessness.
3. If needed, a little child’s Motrin goes a long way. Yes, I know it’s unpopular to talk about and some people would argue against giving kids any medication for not-so-medical emergencies, but remember – this is about survival. As long as you limit the quantity, your child will be safe (and most likely able to sleep better).
