It's the dreaded thought that plagues all parents: did I forget anything? The reality is, yes, you probably did. But the good news is that plenty of items are available at airports and in pharmacies at your destination.

However, you can ensure you don't forget the essentials with these must-have packing items. Double-check your bags before you leave the house for the following items:

1. Change of clothes for babies/toddlers, and for the parents (it can get messy up there). Plastic grocery bags to use for any soiled clothes or diapers.

2. Any/all medication you need for at least 24 hours.

3. Travel toys such as cards, coloring books, games, etc. I try to bring small items that can be used for different games. On one vacation, my son and I played a four-hour game of War. It was an epic battle (that I lost) and kept his attention off the fact that he didn't want to be on the plane.

4. Comfort items including blankets, favorite books and stuffed animals.

5. Food. Bring small snacks from home or buy food from the airport. Don't forget the gum!

6. Headphones for your kids. Many airlines now charge for them and the airlines' headphones are usually too big for younger kids' heads. Make sure you have a pair that fits each kid and put them in their individual carry on.

7. Sling, or baby carrier if you are traveling solo with an infant. Also, if you have a lot of bags to carry through the airport buy some D-ring snap-on clips (also called Carabiners) to hook bags together so you don't leave anything behind. Outdoor stores and even some supermarkets carry them.

8. Peace offering: If you're so inclined, bring a few Starbucks gift cards for your seat neighbors and flight attendants as a preemptive peace offering. You never know how your kids are going to react to long flights, turbulence or a missed nap. I usually take 10-12 $5 gift cards and pass them out before takeoff, telling people it's for any future discomfort caused by my family. You will be amazed at how this makes friends quickly.
