The move towards greener air travel continues with a new agreement between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Commission (EC).

The AIRE plans (Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions) will use “gate to gate” test campaigns to assess new technologies, such as “smooth” or “reduced engine” landings.

AIRE is being spearheaded by the FAA and EC, but major industry players such as Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM, Airbus, Boeing, and navigation service providers including IAA and LFV, are also involved.

Jacques Barrot, EC Vice-President responsible for transport, explained the new initiative:

“The future of the aviation industry depends on its ability to combat climate change through innovation and greater efficiency, and this initiative will enable us to speed up the application of technologies and procedures having a direct impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

“Following the major success of our open skies agreement, this is further proof that the European Union and the United States benefit from working together in the aviation sector.

He added: “We both want a sky open to aircraft but not to emissions.”
