The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced plans to fit red lights to the runways of several major airports to prevent collisions.

Nineteen airports across the country will be fitted with the red lights in a bid to improve runway safety.

The lights will operate as an emergency alert system for pilots if they drift off course during take off or landing. The lights will change color to indicate certain things, such as it is safe to cross a runway during taxiing.

Chicago O’Hare International and JFK, Newark and La Guardia in New York will be among the first airports to start installing the lights over the next three years.

Tammy Jones, FAA spokesperson explained how the lights work to the Chicago Sun-Times: “It works like a stoplight.

“If a pilot is approaching a runway and sees that the lights are illuminated, he needs to stop because there is something there that could cause a collision.”
