Most of the Northern Hemisphere’s great runs are held during the transitional seasons, in the fall and spring. The summertime (aside from the Olympics) are for lesser forays. If you’re planning to lace up for one of them you’re going to want to run smart. That means being something of a safety freak. The folks at Runners Rescue serve up some potentially life-saving tips about how to properly prepare, and precisely how to hydrate.

Meanwhile, here are some summertime venues you might want to consider:

Portsmouth, N.H. hosts its 17th Annual Harbour Trail 5K Road Race & Kid’s Fun Run Saturday July 7.  The route winds its way through the streets of this historic New England city, kicking off at nine in the morning. Pay heed to what Runners Rescue says about safety and pack your squirt guns.

Up East isn’t a bad place to run in the summertime. That’s certainty the way the citizens of Lowell, Mass. see it. They’ve got a series of Good Times 5K events every Tuesday night. The operant word here is night. Runs start at 7pm at Post Office Square, just behind the Tsongas Center Parking Garage and end in the same place. Runners compete for weekly prizes pegged to each week’s theme.

The aim of this year’s Hot Run in the Summertime is to raise money to help rebuild the firehouse in Woodbury Heights, N.J. Ironically, it was destroyed by fire. This is an Aug. 4 5K, and it gets underway at 8am at Woodbury Heights Elementary School. The event combines the 5K run with a one-mile walk. The course itself circumnavigates scenic Glen Lake, carves into some curves and then tackles Chestnut Hill.
