Preparations are taking place for tomorrow’s opening of the new North Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) will officially unveil the facility, which took three years to complete, tomorrow morning (Wednesday, September 17).

From 4am (EDT) flights to the airport will arrive at and depart from the new terminal. The airport’s Smith and Berry terminals will be retired at the same time.

This means passengers taking late-night flights to Detroit with carriers including Air Canada, American Airlines, AirTran Airways, Frontier Airlines, Lufthansa German Airlines, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and USA 3000 will be among the first to use the facility.

Lester Robinson, Chief Executive of the WCAA, said: “The Airport Authority is excited to open this latest addition to Metro Detroit’s premier global gateway on time and on budget.”

He explained that the new Ground Transportation Center for the terminal will open later this year, which could make the roadways around the building “a bit tight”.

However, customers can use the Cell Phone Waiting Lots to pick up passengers arriving at the North Terminal.

He added: “While transitions always present challenges, the Airport Authority and its airline partners have planned a well-choreographed move to the new facility and expect to welcome Metro Detroit travelers into a new era for air travel for our region come Wednesday.”
