Officials from the Wayne County Airport Authority are to meet later this week to consider planned improvement work at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
The authority’s board will decide on Thursday (March 20) if the $1 billion master plan will go ahead.
A vote will take place at the Westin Hotel in the airport’s McNamara Terminal to decide whether or not the master improvement plan will be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Part of the plan includes a seventh runway, terminal expansion and a monorail system. The controversial proposals have been hit with criticism as local homes would have to be demolished to make way for the new landing strip.
Metro’s largest carrier Northwest Airlines has also objected to the monorail, suggesting that it is not cost-effective, reports Crain’s Detroit Business.
If the airport authority votes in favor of the master plan, the proposals would initially need FAA approval. If the FAA backs the plans, the authority would then have to submit a comprehensive financing plan.
