Colombia may not be on your list of must-see destinations, but its capital city of seven million, Bogota, delights and delivers. A simple walk along the crowded downtown streets bears witness to a colorful culture and vibrant green parks all with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. From nearly every corner, street, or square, the Andean Mountains are visible. Yet, perhaps even a more majestic view is gazing back at the city below from on top those very mountains at Montserrate.
My flight to Colombia, Bogota (BOG) arrived and I was somewhat nervous about my weekend jaunt. I’d heard about a vivacious city and its people, but the stories were also told with caution. However, all I discovered is a place I can’t wait to return to someday soon.
I decided to the take the ‘teleferico,’ cable car, to the top of Monserrate and enjoy an afternoon walk and a late lunch from its vista. Clouds raced across the sky quickly, occasionally dropping rain to parts of Bogota.
My tram ride up also carried the local priest. I eventually stopped
into the Catholic Church to admire its construction, and I sat down to enjoy the moment of the mass currently in session. Guitar music played and I
gave thanks for the opportunity to see the beautiful view, to see the
beauty of Bogota.
Embracing the Zeus-like feeling atop the mountain, I looked over the expansive city nicknamed the ‘Athens of South America” and started to locate the main attractions. Luckily for me, I met a friend who happily pointed out all the city attractions with zest. Cheerful, polite, and attractive, she epitomized most every Colombian I met.
Not to be missed is a night out in Zona Rosa or Parque 93 area. Both provide live music venues, clubs, and great people watching.
Travel tip: If you’re looking for other English speaking travelers, the Irish Pub Zona Rosa is a great place to go.
Bogota Flights: Delta and Continental offer direct Colombia flights from New York starting at $323, including all taxes and fees.
Bogota Hotels: I recommend the Embassy Suites Los Rosales, with rates under $200 USD, for both its location and amenities. You are just a short safe walk or taxi ride from many bars, cafes, and international restaurants all frequented by locals for both business and pleasure. The hotel offers daily breakfast, use of the business center, and a daily two-hour managers reception with an open bar and live music. Also, Hilton HHonors members can find great value at a category 2 hotel.
