Just an hour from downtown Savannah, where people still give directions like, “cross the bridge, then make a right on the first paved road,” tourists discover five counties collectively known as the Salkehatchie region. Situated halfway between Augusta and Savannah on the South Carolina side of the river, this unique natural wonder provides a chance to experience the diverse ecosystem and culture.
To get to the lowlands of South Carolina, the Savannah / Hilton Head (SAV) airport serves as the closest, but numerous others are just a few hours away. Drives from Columbia, SC, and Jacksonville, Fl take less than three hours.
As a popular place for hunting and Pine Tree farming, the locals of these South Carolina counties understand the importance of conservation and the environment, and offer ways to enjoy it. Nature hikes on private land or the eventual new trail still under construction offer chances to see giant oak trees amid abundant wildlife. Visitors can see turkey, wild boar and deer all in their natural habitat.
On the Savannah River, bird watching enthusiasts can see numerous species including Osprey, Swallow-tail Kites, Cormorants, Egrets and our national Bald Eagle. Alligators up to 10-12 feet can also be spotted soaking up the sun along the riverbanks.
The region shares its history through art and artifacts. The region is peppered with diverse extremes of antique stores and new artistry. In fact, the Salkehatchie Arts Center displays local artists work from painting to sculptures with impressive works available at reasonable prices.
A trip to Salkehatchie can seem like a trip to a simpler time. A place with rich history and plentiful access to the wild – wildly simple indeed.
Travel Tip:
The Paleoamerican Expedition returns Allendale County and its Topper Site this spring. The excavation site unearthed evidence that dates the existence of humans in the Western Hemisphere to before the Ice Age. Visitors can assist and help rewrite history this May 3rd-June 5th.
