You don’t have to travel halfway around the world to find some flat-out fabulous festivals. Just book a flight over the horizon, south to the Caribbean. Carnivals, food fests, and flights of fancy await.

Here are three hot options:

Ruminate on the wonders of Puerto Rican rum at the March 24 – 25 Taste of Rum at Paseo La Princesa, Viejo San Juan. A one-day cover charge of $40 covers a lot: unlimited rum samples, limited food samples, and access to seminars and competitions. This is a first-rate international food and drink fest, and it’s as close as a trip to PR.

Seek out the settlement of New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas come May 5. These folks have a natural affinity with residents of Key West, sharing lots of historical ties. Taste Bahamian cuisine, buy Bahamian handicrafts. At the Island Roots Heritage Festival, find out the facts behind the genesis of these fascinating islands and come away the better for it.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines bills its June 29 – July 10 doings, better known as Vincy Mas, as ‘The Hottest Carnival in the Caribbean.’ Phantasmagorical street parades, steel pan performers, consummate calypso – all are here for eye and ear. Then there’s the food – and drink. Plan on sleeping very late the next day.
