If you’re a major airport (especially a hub) and don’t have it, you’re at a decided disadvantage. Now word that Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) plans to have wireless high-speed Internet fully up and running by the end of March.

The system is already operational in the secure (beyond security) areas of BWI, which is a major focus airport for both discount airlines Southwest and AirTran Airways. The set-up will spread to the baggage-claim areas and ticket counters by the end of March.

Wi Fi will do nothing but enhance BWI’s position as perhaps the Beltway’s most buoyant airport, one that’s become a magnet for discount airlines.

The network’s coverage at Baltimore/Washington is pretty comprehensive: Concourses A, B, C, D, and E as well as the AIRMALL, special shopping and eating areas.

Concourse Communications Group designed and installed the set-up. The neutral-host network offers roaming access through partnerships with the likes of AT&T Wi-Fi, GoRemote, iPass, and T-Mobile. Travelers can also purchase Internet access in the airport from Boingo Wireless for $7.95 per day.
