When you think of remote islands you don’t usually consider lobster shacks and ocean-side hotels, but in Anegada, the typical way of thinking is challenged. This little island – one of the British Virgin Islands’ lesser known but nonetheless breathtaking islands – is located only 1 hour by boat from Trellis Bay on Beef Island, or a little over an hour from Tortola.
Those who boat by themselves are in for some testy conditions – the position of the island is such that when the cross-wind hits, the waves swell to complicated heights, making it a little hard to navigate onto the island. But once you’ve arrived in Anegada, zen sets in.The northernmost island of the BVIs, Anegada is only 10 miles long and home to only 100 people. It is surrounded by Horseshoe Reef, the site of hundreds of ship wrecks over the centuries. However, this reef provides water lovers with some of the best snorkeling and diving in the British Virgin Islands gives Anegada terrific snorkeling
and diving.
The Anegada Reef Hotel is your first point of entrance to the island. Grab a rum punch and let the caretaker take you to your hotel, where you’ll find full-sized rooms with king beds, air-conditioning and a shower big enough to fit 10. The Anegada Reef Hotel is one of the hosting spots for the BVI Kite Jam Competition in March 2010, and the tiny little island is slowly preparing for the rush of boarders about take over. (Rooms start at $185 night and include breakfast and dinner, making this an affordable ‘private island’ getaway.)
A quick car ride to the other side of the island and you’ll wide up at Cow’s Wreck Beach, one of the best spots on the island for snorkeling and diving. Enjoy a rum cocktail and the best BBQ lobster you’ve ever had in your life, then grab your gear and start exploring.
As journalists in our nature to explore, so it’s no surprise that we immediately started investigating the island. Some went behind trees and over dunes with cameras to see what they can find, other took off down the beach and a few dove into the reefs to see what colors they would discover. While each one of our stories is likely going to be different, one thing remains the same about Anegada: It’s easy to fall in love with this island.
