On the 29th day of the year’s second month we thought it neat to talk up America’s 29th state, Iowa. Aside from the presidential caucus every four years people tend to leap over Iowa when it comes to planning a vacation. Pity, because if you know where to look it’s an intriguing place.
Despite Des Moines, Iowa is a state of small towns, each with it’s own identity, its own story. Consider:
Pella. The map tells you you’re in Iowa, but the ambiance is decidedly Dutch. The architecture, and horticulture all holler ‘Holland.’ May’s Tulip Festival is one of the state’s biggest seasonal draws.
Cedar Falls Don’t confuse it with larger Cedar Rapids. This jewel box of a small city is one of the National Historic Trust’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations. Brick sidewalks, public artwork. Old-fashioned lampposts – all set Cedar Falls apart. Downtown really comes alive at night. Intertwined in this Iowa enclave are some 65 miles of trails, perfect for hiking. Look closely and you might spot a Bald Eagle.
Effigy Mounds National Monument is the sacred centerpiece of a 2,526-acre forest running along the Mississippi River bluffs. See where Native Americans built ceremonial and burial mounds mimicking birds and other animals. Explore the mysteries of a people who lived here between 500 B.C. and 1,300 A.D. and, just perhaps, better understand our particular place in time.
Don’t dismiss this state as mere flyover country. Its pleasures are subtle, serene and worth the sojourn along some roads less traveled.
