Okaloosa Regional Airport (Web site: flyvps.com) has been renamed by officials as Northwest Florida Regional Airport.

Okaloosa County Commissioners on Tuesday (September 2) unanimously approved the renaming of the airport, which will take effect immediately.

Greg Donovan, Airport Director, was quoted by TheDestinLog.com as saying: “A self-descriptive geographic reference that better encompasses the airport’s mission and location has been sought and we believe that Northwest Florida better identifies the airport’s geographic location to out-of-state travelers.”

In July, the airport reported a 6 percent increase in the number of passengers compared to the same period last year.
