So you want to go to Las Vegas. Whether you’re there once a month, or a complete and utter rookie, there’s always new trouble to find just around the corner. Don’t waste your time waiting in line for things, shaking hands with all the wrong people or drinking martinis that you could probably get for free elsewhere. Do your homework.

Our Vegas experts have seen more of Las Vegas than anyone in a 100-mile radius, and will be the first to tell you that spending time on The Strip boils down to one thing: making the right connections.

This isn’t just any vacation. You don’t just book a flight to Las Vegas and take pretty pictures – this is Vegas, kids. A little thinking goes a long way (and makes for long nights in VIP clubs, too).

Check out these tips on how to experience this 24-hour city like a pro, and learn everything from seemingly innocent wardrobe no-no’s to totally inconvenient scheduling flaws.

10 Things Not To Do In Vegas:

1. DON’T go to the amusement park on top of the Stratosphere -you’ll waste a day in line waiting for the roller coaster. Instead, use your days to rest up and get a cabana by your hotel’s pool.

2. DON’T stay at Circus Circus. There’s a reason it’s so cheap. Treasure Island is right in the middle of the Strip by the Mirage and the Venetian, but it’s still relatively inexpensive. With renovated rooms and comfy beds, staying here is worth the money – and it’s location means you won’t splurge on cabs.

3. DON’T bring jeans during the summer. Some nice places don’t allow them, and they’ll trap in the heat anyway.

4. DON’T gamble while drunk. (Or DO and lose all your money.)

5. DON’T expect to find old glamour in downtown Vegas. Fried Oreos have replaced old Rat Pack Luxury.

6. DON’T wake up early to take in the sights. Stay up late instead, it’s prettier anyway.

7. DON’T touch the mini-bar. You’ll get charged even if you don’t consume the goods. Instead, stock up on snacks and drinks at a nearby Walgreens.

8. DON’T split your group up between different hotels. You’ll spend 10 minutes wandering through a maze to find your next door neighbor.

9. DON’T go to a club without trying to get a VIP card first. Contact people through Twitter, Yelp or Facebook or you’ll wait in line all night.

10. DON’T bring the kids. Most attractions here are geared toward adults.
