In an effort to become one of three privatized airports, Puerto Rico Luis Munoz Marin International Airport near San Juan has submitted its own privatization application to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA has received the application, and will consider it in a 30-day review, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Right now, the airport is owned and managed by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, and its main international gateway is through American Airlines. If it were to become privatized, the operators would provide maintenance, security and improvement, and periodic payments.

Privatization is more common in Europe and Asia, but is slowly reaching the United States. Currently, the New Orleans Louis Armstrong airport is privatized, and Chicago Midway is resubmitting its application for Feb. 1 2010. The Chicago airport recently spent $2.5 billion applying, but needs to revamp its position.
