Who said travel has to cost a fortune? If there’s one good thing that came from a down economy, it’s that hotel room prices have dropped dramatically in some of the top U.S. destinations.

According to a new study from Hotels.com, you can stay on Fifth Avenue without having to pay Fifth Avenue dollars. The Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI) shows that New York City hotel rates dropped 30 percent in the first half of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008.

This drop tied with Las Vegas hotels as the greatest price fall among major US cities. However, New York still ranks at the top for the most expensive hotel prices in the US, followed by Washington DC and Boston. Washington DC’s hotel prices fell 11 percent and Boston’s fell 16 percent.

Steve Dumaine, senior director of merchandising for hotels.com, said in a press release: “Hotel rates are at a historic low right now and it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the great deals on New York City hotels and around the northeast. The gap between star categories has narrowed, allowing travelers to enjoy more luxury for virtually the same rate as lower categories. And extra offers like free internet and dining discounts are becoming more prevalent, offering travelers even more value.”

Take the vacation you’ve been waiting for… grab a cheap flight to New York, find a cheap New York hotel room and hit the stores Fifth Avenue!
