Back in the day, Florida’s north Atlantic coast was America’s answer to the French Riviera. That all changed when the railroad opened up the Sunshine State’s deep south. Now largely forgotten, the seashore between Amelia Island and St. Augustine is one of Florida’s sweetest stretches of coastline – and you can have it almost to yourself.

Help rebuild after Super Storm Sandy – Newark, New Jersey

Every year United Way sets up volunteer projects in communities across the country that need help the most. In Newark, volunteers will work on a variety of relief and rebuilding projects along the Jersey Coast and throughout the tri-state area. See the United Way website for more details.

Sea turtle conservation – Campemento Tecoman, Mexico

At night, conservation volunteers comb the 15-mile black sand beach for recently laid eggs of the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles. The eggs are carefully collected and taken to camp for incubation. Once hatched, the young turtles are immediately released into the sea, while volunteers stand guard from predators. See the Projects Abroad website for more details.

Care for people with disabilities – Guatemala

In communities where resources are already scarce, it’s not uncommon for individuals with disabilities to go without vital care and services. By leading activity sessions, sharing meals, assisting with physical therapy or simply providing companionship, volunteers can enrich the life of people with disabilities. See the Cross-Cultural Solutions website for more information.
