Located in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, Turin is a beautiful city of historic, architectural and scenic charm. Often called the ‘capital of the Alps,’ the city is a showcase of Baroque architecture and museums, as well as being a fantastic base to explore the nearby mountains and the exquisite valleys that surround it. Turin enjoys a rich history which is reflected in the numerous museums, art galleries, churches, piazzas, opera houses and parks that attract tourists from all corners of the globe. For those interested in areas of historical and cultural significance, Turin’s museums are home to some of the most comprehensive collections of Ancient Egyptian Art in the world. The city is also known for the infamous Shroud of Turin – a piece of cloth widely believed to offer a depiction of Jesus Christ, a symbol of great religious significance. The shroud is kept in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in the city’s thriving center. Literature, sports and cuisine are also attractions of this unique city. At its very center are the Piazza Castello and Palazzo Reale, both of which offer stunning and scenic areas in which to relax amidst the thriving hub of the city.
With temperatures averaging 27°C / 80°F in August, the summer months are considered the best time to travel to the city in order to fully enjoy all it has to offer. Even in these high temperatures, the climate downtown rarely feels too hot to sightsee or explore in comfort. To find cooler weather, it is also possible to travel to the hills surrounding the city.
The cheapest times to visit the city are during the off-peak seasons. With summer being the busiest times, any month outside of this will yield cheaper accommodations in the city’s many hotels, as well as cheaper flights from most European cities.
Turin offers several convenient ways of getting around the city’s many attractions. The GTT operates the public transportation of the city, which includes railway lines, a metro route, tram lines and multiple bus routes which cover the sprawling downtown area as well as the surrounding suburbs and nearby towns. There are also taxi and car rental services available.
