If Montego Bay is Jamaica’s hotspot, Negril is its serene sister resort. Sit back on your flight to Negril and relax – you’re headed to one of the most casual vacation destination spots in the Caribbean. The purpose of a Negril vacation is to lay back and unwind. Take in the sunset, enjoy a rum cocktail and let the smooth sounds of Negril enchant you.

There are plenty of places to party here, but most vacationers book Negril flights for Negril’s quiet character; the area’s initial charm. Originally discovered in the 1960s, Negril was a haven for hippies and flower children who wanted a place to be free on vacation. No discos, no dance parties – Negril was founded on the premise of casual, and it still retains that vibe today. Negril still attracts a young party crowd, but there’s more to this island resort than the beachfront bars and reggae parties. The 7-mile stretch of pristine beach is encircled by five miles of cliffs, coral reefs and secret hideaway spots along the beach.

Negril Insider Information

  • Take a day trip to the Mayfield Falls and explore the 22 mini-waterfalls and swimming holes that surround the area. The only way to get to the falls is through a maze of country roads, so an organized tour is a good option. While you're here, walk through the bamboo-shaded water holes edged with flowers, vines and trees. Since it is a natural habitat, it's advised to bring some mosquito repellent. A bathing suit is essential -- some parts of the falls involve walking through natural whirlpools. If you want to swim, make your way to the underwater cave and enjoy the tranquility of the water.
  • The Negril Lighthouse is worth a visit. It was built in 1894 and is open to visitors every day. The trek to the top is intense, but the 100-foot climb is worth it for the breathtaking views of Jamaica.
  • Rhodes Hall Plantation is a great day trip for those visitors looking for a break from the beach. Take a guided horseback tour of the Jamaican countryside and hear stories and legends about local landmarks. You'll ride through forests of banana trees and coconut palms. Beware of the Crocodile River -- crocs still call the area home.
