Masada
Masada is the site of the AD 66 uprising by 967 Jewish Zealots against the Roman Empire. When victory seemed impossible, they took their own lives. This heroic history makes the mountaintop fortress in the Judean Desert one of the most popular sites for Israeli tourism. Reach the fortress by riding a cable car or hiking up the Snake Path, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the desert and the Dead Sea. A natural amphitheater on the west side of the mountain, reachable only from Arad, is home to The Masada Sound and Light Show, which retells the site’s history with pyrotechnic effects.
