Airport Overview

Kos Island International Airport, affectionately referred to as Hippocrates Airport, is 22km (13 miles) southwest of the town of Kos. Built in the 1960s, the tiny terminal building serves almost two million travelers per annum, and is particularly popular during summer. It’s rated as the sixth-busiest airport in Greece.

Whether you’re staying on Kos or planning on doing some island hopping, there are plenty of airlines offering flights – scheduled and charter – to Kos Island International Airport. The list of carriers reads like a who’s who of the tourist industry with Air Berlin, Austrian Airlines, Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways and TUI flying there.

The airport has something of a reputation for being disorganized and outdated – long queues and travelers sleeping on tiled floors are regular sights at Kos Island International.

Terminal Transfer

Both arrivals and departures are situated within the same terminal building. In peak season, the airport often operates way over capacity, so it might be necessary to queue outside the building. If traveling in summer, make sure you have enough sunblock and liquids.

Getting into Town

Rail: There is no train service from the airport.

Bus: Local bus service KTEL offers transport from the airport to Kos, as well as to Kardamena, Kefalos and Mastihari. The bus stop is situated just outside the airport in front of a big roundabout.

Taxi: Dozens of taxis cluster around the entrance to the airport. It’s advisable to agree on a price beforehand .

Car Parking

The parking area has bays for 100 cars and 80 buses.

Information Desks

In spite of the airport’s somewhat chaotic air, the information desk personnel are highly attentive – greet them with a smile and they’ll be more than happy to assist you.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: There is a banking and currency exchange facility; however there are no postal facilities at the airport.

Luggage: Head for the airport’s main information desk if you have any queries about your luggage, or try the relevant airline. There is a lost property office for items that are misplaced in the terminal.

Conference and business: The airport doesn’t have any conference or business facilities.

Other facilities: There is a medical center and a police station in the terminal building.
