Scottsdale’s hot – literally and figuratively. Lots of new goings on in the deep desert this time of year, and we thought you might want to know about some of them:
Say ‘Talking Stick Resort’ and people in these parts automatically think “gaming and conferences.” Add to that mix Native American cultural performances. A local dance company called Yellow Bird Productions now puts on a hoop dance, plains-style fancy dance, and jingle dress dance each Friday and Saturday in Talking Stick’s Fire Garden. Show times are 5 and 6:30 p.m. While on the property, you owe it to yourself to visit the Cultural Center where artwork from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is on display.
Stay hungry (it gives you an edge), but not overly so. Then, head to downtown Scottsdale and sample Chef Badman’s innovative small-plate menu at Baratin. Sandwiches, pâté, a cheese plate, vegetables and dessert each can be had for a comparative pittance.
Hungry for good art? Plan ahead a bit and hit Scottsdale July 5. Yeah, we know that’s the hottest part of the year, but the temperature can fall off fast once the sun sets. That’s why promoters have scheduled the town’s 23rd Annual Summer Spectacular ArtWalk from 7 to 9 p.m. Choose to peruse what you will of some 100 downtown art galleries. Listen to live jazz, find a wine tasting that tempts your palate. Also on the menu this year are live artist demonstrations by the Scottsdale Gallery Association’s YEA! Program, an effort devoted to promoting New & Emerging Artists.
Don’t let the heat drive you away from the desert this time of year. As with most things in life, it’s all about timing. Plan to stay up late, and sleep in the following morning.
