Love was in the air for airlines this Valentine’s Day.

American Airlines and US Airways announced yesterday they’ll merge later this year following a standard regulatory process.

American recently went through a cost restructuring and re-branding process after filing for bankruptcy in 2011.

Travelers won’t feel the effects of the merger immediately, but the history of airline consolidation tells us change will come.  Logistical kinks are likely at the beginning, but US Airways is a merger veteran (the airline previously merged with America West) and there is hope any lessons learned will come in handy as this new integration progresses.
