Lots of us like to travel when others don’t; fewer people and cheaper rates. With Memorial Day in the rear view mirror, folks are making summer travel plans now. So to avoid getting caught in the crush, Travelocity is offering a trio of off-peak alternate destinations – places packed with value – but not necessarily people this time of year.
Tops among the online travel company’s picks are South Africa, Ecuador, and Australia. Here’s why. When it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s winter in the Southern. Winter in the lower portion of the planet runs from June through August. That’s off-peak.
Based on Travelocity’s latest data, hotel pricing down there has dropped with the change of seasons. Accommodations are 15 per cent less pricey in South Africa, ten per cent less expensive in Ecuador, and a more modest two per cent less in Australia.
So, what do you have to give up to travel down there this time of year? Not a lot – depending on where you’re specifically headed. “Many destinations still offer spring-like weather conditions, with cooler temperatures at night and slightly warmer temperatures during the day,” says Travelocity Editor Jennifer Gaines. “With pricing for international travel on the rise, many travelers will be surprised that they can take advantage of cheaper hotel options, shorter lines at popular activities, and even indulge in some winter fun during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months.”
