This ancient Greek city still overflows with traces of its mythological past, from ancient ruins to temples of the gods. On your next trip to the Greek capital, don’t miss these top seven things to do in Athens.

The Acropolis

Perched high above it all, the Acropolis tops the list of must-sees in Athens. Take your time exploring the rocky remnants of the citadel, including monuments like the Parthenon and Old Temple of Athena. Nearby, you can view ancient artifacts and grab lunch with a view at the Acropolis Museum.

Plaka

Beneath the Acropolis, you’ll find one Athens’ oldest neighborhoods. Here, you can stroll the romantic streets, pick up a few souvenirs (gold jewelry and local art, especially) and dine on authentic Greek food at one of the many cafes in Plaka. While you’re there, don’t miss the numerous art museums that can be found throughout this little town.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus

This group of towering columns is all that remains of what was once the largest temple in all of Athens. Only 15 columns still exist where more than 100 once stood, but this landmark maintains its reputation as one of Athens’ most impressive sites.

Athens Central Market

Definitely worth a stroll, the Athens Central Market is where you’ll find the freshest fish, meats, produce, cheese and bread in the city. This is a place where bargains are to be had, and even if you’re not cooking, you’ll find plenty of cheap and tasty Greek dishes at the restaurants surrounding the market.

The Agora

A Roman Agora in Athens? Yes, you read that right. The Roman Agora was built during the heyday of Julius Caesar and Octvianus as an expansion of the Greek Agora. Today, you can see the remains or archeological structures like the beautiful Tower of the Winds or the remains of the towering Gate of Athena.

National Archaeological Museum

Arguably one of the best museums in all of Greece, the National Archaeological Museum offers a look at centuries worth of cultural artifacts, dating as far back as prehistory. Plan to spend at least a few hours soaking up all the National Archaeological Museum has to offer.

National Garden

Take a break from the crowds of tourists and relax at the National Garden of Athens, where you can roam through 38 acres of green space without charge. A zoo and botanical garden are also part of the National Garden.
