Here’s an anti-spring break destination, a place to retreat while the rest of your friends revel by the seashore. In Natchez, Mississippi, time takes on a new dimension – more malleable, even meandering.

The beach here is arrayed along the Mississippi River. Look, but don’t touch. Not even with your toes. There’s plenty to see and do on land – in the bars, blues cafes, bed and breakfasts, and museums of this quaint old river town. You can:

– Nest in one of Natchez’s legion of B&Bs. A favorite is The Burn, a classic 1834 (that’s two years before the Alamo fell, folks) Greek Revival home. It’s close to downtown and — weather permitting — you can use the pool.

– Don your walking shoes and stroll along The Natchez Trails, a maze of city streets and walkways dotted with kiosks that lay out the history of the area. If you prefer, rent a bike and cover more ground. The best views are up on the bluff, overlooking the Mississippi River.

– Immerse yourself in antebellum history, up close and personal. March 10 through April 14 Natchez hosts its annual Spring Pilgrimage. Tour Greek Revival mansions, take in some of the South’s best live music, and spend an evening at the theater.

– Imbibe Biscuits & Blues in the Main Street eatery by the same name. This place is a magnet for some of the South’s best talent – acoustic and plugged in. Performances are generally around dinnertime. But every now and again artists play around with time and stretch out the show into the wee hours. Just ask ‘em.
